Problems installing ATI Radeon HD 4650 drivers on Debian AMD64

Hello all,

I'm attempting to install a debian lenny on my pc:
Configuration:
Asus M2N78 Pro (AM2+ socket)
AMD64 Phenom II 9950 (quadcore)
8gb dualchannel ram
1tb hd
ati radeon HD 4650 512mb

What I did:
I installed Debian Lenny AMD64 with a net-install disk.
installed the base, standard and desktop.

once the installation is done, and the login screen should be shown, I get a "out of range" notice on my monitors (I use 2 20" tft screens)
after going to prompt, and installing the latest ati drivers (ATI Catalyst™ 9.6 Proprietary Linux x86 Display Driver (also for 64bit system)) from a usb, I reboot and now I can log onto the system

After some reboots and changes in the catalyst software I get my desktop spread across the 2 screens.

But, moving windows across the screen, or scrolling in web pages or anything, makes the screen flash, and move with gaps (like on a windows machine with no video drivers)

how can I fix this? considering that I'm still rather new to the whole linux idea.

If I need to give more information about anything, feel free to ask, and I'll paste as soon as possible

thx in advance

Thx for the quick reply, but installing the driver wasn't really the problem.
I found a guide on how to install the fglrx driver (http://wiki.debian.org/ATIProprietary)
and it works perfect now

but that brings me to my next problem

because I have 2 monitors (20" wide) I need to manually edit my xorg.conf file

Both monitors have a resolution of 1680x1050
but the 2nd screen is more like 1600x1050 (black bar on right side of screen)
although the system says it's a total of 3360x1050

I currently have:

Code:
Section "Device"
    Identifier "ATI 0"
    Driver "fglrx"
    Screen 0
EndSection
Section "Device"
    Identifier "ATI 1"
    Driver "fglrx"
    Screen 1
EndSection
Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Default Screen 0"
    Device "ATI 0"
    DefaultDepth 24
EndSection
Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Default Screen 1"
    Device "ATI 1"
    DefaultDepth 24
EndSection
Any way to fix this? and any way to improve the xorg.conf?

thx again
