UPDATE:

I tried the net install of Sarge. Via-Rhine was an option. I selected that option, but it still did not detect my network card. Maybe I am mistaken about my network card. How can I find out, to make sure, what my network card is? lspci said everything was VIA Technologies, and I think it said my video card was VGA compatible (but when I used VGA, I get slow and fuzzy GUI).

Hmm, new idea. If the ethernet cable connecting my computer to the hub was bent or broken somewhere (I'd say it was about 50ft), would that affect Debian being able to detect my network card?

Is it a ethernet pci card or is it onboard,if it is onboard what kind of motherboard?
It should have been detected automatic.Post lspci.
Second ? no
Here is mepis it should detect your card,its a live cd plus you can install it if everything works ok,check it out;

I bought the computer in 2005. So, what do most newer computers have? Onboard? I dont know...I guess I can look at my motherboard. All I know is, when I plugged the cable in my ethernet port, connected it to the hub, etc, I was online.
I'll go write down what lspci returns exactly....

comprookie2000 05-30-2005 12:18 PM

I'm sure it is on board, what kind of computer, make and model?

Oh, I'm just now seeing the mepis thing. I'll check that out, too.

Its intel, the ethernet shoult be e100 and the graphics is 1810.or i810.

cillm527 05-30-2005 02:50 PM

ok...thanks. i'll try that.

i tried installing mepis. it's not detecting a network, either. im beginning to wonder if my wire suddenly broke somewhere. i don't know...

i'm about ready to give up.

EDIT: i tried e100, that didn't work either. sarge is still saying "no network card detected". i seriously don't know what to do, now.

comprookie2000 05-30-2005 02:57 PM

Look at lsmod while you are in mepis and it will show you all the modules.Try hooking it up on another cable and boot the mepis cd and see if you get on the internet.also look at /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 to see what your graphics is for later.

cillm527 05-30-2005 03:22 PM

another cable? as in another physical wire? i only have one, that was given to me.

what am i exactly looking for with lsmod? i cant get online with mepis. i dont know why. i went to the os center, network interaces, and the only one working was the local ip.

cillm527 05-30-2005 07:55 PM

Ok, I put 10gigs of my memory for WINDOWS, to see if it would at least detect my network card. It didn't. It used to. Now, it doesn't. I don't understand why it doesn't...So, please, anyone help.

I'm using VIA rhine, I know it. I even checked BIOS, and it even said it's VIA. I'm really confused, maybe I did something to break my network card?

Please some one, help.

UPDATE:

Hey, thanks for your help, man. But I found my problem. It turns out, in the system BIOS, the onboard option for PCI was disabled. I enabled it, and voila (sp?), I could get online. I now have Debian installed, and I like it. Thanks.
