Problem with startx/kde

I am running on Debian Sarge KDE 3.2 with GDM. Then I apt-get upgrade kde to version 3.3. After it finished, I rebooted the system, reached gdm, selected KDE and login. But it still shows KDE 3.2?

So I tried apt-get install kdm, chose as default display manager, rebooted and reached kdm, tried logging in and no response after I click the "Login" button.

Went back to console and tried startkde, it flood my screen with "Kpersonaliser bla bla bla".

Tried "startx" but it start xfce instead.

1) Is my upgrading KDE the way correct to do so?

2) How do I edit startx to let it start other DE/WM? I don't have the .xinitrc file in my home directory.

3) How do I choose whether to start kdm or gdm on boot?

Thanks and Happy New Year

1) It sounds ok but without the errors nobody can tell you what's wrong.
2) There's a systemwide xinitrc file, probably in /etc/X11/. Copy to ~/.xinitrc and change it to your liking.
With startx it's also possible:
Code:
startx /usr/bin/startkde
It could also be it's just the name of your window manager for example icewm starts with "startx /usr/bin/icewm". Just check which file exists.
3) Delete all managers except for the one you want to use. Or edit the boot scripts of the runlevel. I don't know where to do that though.

Happy new year!

dpkg -reconfigure kdm
>> if you intend to start kdm instead of some other DM,, and then reboot to take effect
or simply edit the /etc/X11/default-display-manager to point to kdm
