printer won't print

Running Debian via Kanotix HDD installation, on PC with Athlon 1600XP. Samsung ML-1740 laser printer installed using ML-1710 driver--closest available and said to be the one to use.
USB connected printer won't print via test button on KDE printer setup page, or queued print job. CUPS selected, and I tried restarting CUPS via command line. Print Job IPP report shows printer stopped. Printer IPP report shows printer paused and rejecting jobs. I caught a glimpse of one other message somewhere, saying "server not accepting print jobs" . Running in stand alone mode--no network. This is a functional printer--runs fine in Windows XP. Have not figured out how to install the Linux driver included on the Samsung installation disk. Would appreciate suggestions. Bumfuzzled

I've got Samsung ML-1710 laser printer. I installed the cups and foomatic packages from Debian and then ran the driver installation program from Samsung CD and it works fine.

If Kanotix has cups already installed, then your only problem will be running the driver installation program from the CD. The installer is a GUI program and it needs to be run as root, so first you need to "su" to root in a terminal window and then create a symlink between .Xauthority in your home directory and root's home directory:

$ su
# ln -fs /home/your_username/.Xauthority /root/

(Where "your_username" is YOUR username. )

OK, next you'll need to mount the CD in order to be able to access it:

# mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdc /media/cdrom

Next, you can run the setup script from the cd-rom:

# sh /media/cdrom/setup.sh

Then it should be just a matter of clicking the right buttons with your mouse. After you've successfully installed the printer driver and configured the printer, you can remove the symbolic link from root's home directory (or maybe you'll want to keep it?), unmount the cd-rom and return to normal user:

# rm /root/.Xauthority
# umount /media/cdrom
# exit
$

That is how I did it -- hopefully this will work for you, too.

Thanks, Dead Parrot, for the detailed reply. I'm batting zero trying to establish the symbolic link. Keep getting "file or directory does not exist". This is pretty typical of the results I've achieved for years trying to make any Linux distribution fundamentally useable. I'm watching my upper/lower case, etc. , but can't see that I'm doing anything wrong. May have to dig deeper into KDE, trying to discover if there's a more automated way to install that driver already at my finger tips.

Maybe you don't have .Xauthority in you home directory? If this is the case, then you don't need to create the symbolic link. Just skip this "create a symbolic link" part and proceed straight to the "mount the CD" part of my reply.

Oh, and I just remembered one more thing that might be useful to know: before you attempt to configure your printer, you should boot the computer with power turned on in your printer. This should ensure that Debian recognizes your printer. If you have booted to Debian with power turned off in the printer and you turn the power on just before starting the printer configuration program, then it's likely that Debian (or rather the Linux kernel) will tell the configuration program that you don't have any printers and the configuration will fail.

Thanks for taking time to advise me. I was advised by others that installation of the Samsumg software is risky because its version of CUPS is "paperweight" compared to the Debian version in Kanotix. Just for the benefit of others, my failure to install the ML-1740 apparently was caused by the following: In the Add Printer Wizard the Samsung was shown connected through USB#1. Following the wizard's instruction to select the USB, then install the ML-1710 driver, yielded a dead printer. When I deleted the installation and went back through the process, selecting the Samsung Printer icon connected to USB#1, the installation
worked. Perfect test page printout.
