Good day, i have created a topic in " LinuxQuestions.org > Forums > Linux Forums > Linux - Newbie" called "PPPoE connection problem under Debian Testing " but i did not get an answer or solution to my problem.
gradinaruvasile: weird a friend of mine that uses aptosid told me that it was unable to do that...
...
That is aptosid policy.
It is not impossible, it is not hard either, but aptosid does the things the way they do it,
for what reason ever.
On Debian that is not a problem at all.
I am not sure what you want to control. The connection is either up or down.
But if you want a gui-tool for that it is your choice and right.
From what i have heard gui-networkmanagers make more trouble than the problems they solve, so i use the cli.
I didn't understand that you are only searching for a gui-tool. Sorry.
j1alu: i want to control the connection it self as i do with qinternet(under openSUSE) by that meaning the starting and the stopping of the connection. Another way to this will be to buy a router that manages the pppoe connection.
Does the out-put give any informations ?
By "cli" do you mean the linux console(terminal) ?
"pon" and "poff" does not work that way?
Or "/etc/init.d/networking start/stop" ? (perhaps a simple "service networking start/stop").
I really ask, i leave my connection being up.
Yes, with cli i mean from the command line, or a terminal.
I think the gui-network-managers don't use the /etc/network/interfaces file, if you got a router you will need some entries (besides the loop one already there) and if you use pppoeconf it will make the entries on the fly.
I was assuming you had no connection, as long you got one i wouldn't fiddle with the file.
Well i was thinking to buy a router that can establish the pppoe connection for me so basically network manager will only get the lan ip allocated by the router.
Yes i had no connection and yes i have read on debian wiki about pon dsl-provider and poff but i hoped that a gui exists and that it could help me since i`m a newbie to debian.
"Easy to use, functional PPPoE protocol connections manager for linux (DEBIAN BASED) written using Qt4 libraries. You don't need to type anything to the console. Prerequisites: /etc/ppp/peers folder structure /usr/bin/pon & poff programs "
Looks fine to me, i make the connection using pppoeconf(so i dont use the interface since is in polish) and control it with this program. I will try to contact the developer maybe is there a way to translate the package to english

Good news for Debian users that use a PPPoE connection:
Hi.
Well, it is translated already.
It should show the right language, but it depends on your system settings.
I will add a manual setting and reupload the program today if I have some time.
Thanks for interests in my program.
It encourages me to further develop that project.
Write me if you have more feature requests.
