I'm a noob, with debian 3.1 and a 2.6 kernel. I previously used a 2.4 kernel on the same machine and got an internal PCI modem to work (although very slow, 14kbps) I'm looking to do the same again. My question is weather ppp works differently on 2.6 than it did on 2.4? I'm using kde. To test this out I've used the command line 'pon' and 'poff' as well as kppp from the desktop. The hardware seems capeable of doing the job. I type pon, I hear dialing, I hear a machine on the other end pick up, and beeping start. Then there's a click and a hangup, and a minute later the computer tries to dial again. the same thing happens over and over. From kppp the story is the same, but kppp doesn't redial. A small window comes up that says

pppd daemon died unexpectedly
exit status 1

If I "man" pppd to find out what "exit status 1" is it says "An immediately fatal error of some kind occured, such as an essential system call failing, or running out of virtual memory." Any help would be apreciated. ps I think I have the domain and DNS settings right - I've checked them over and over...

I checked lsmod and I don't have a module with ppp in the name. What would the name of the right module be? Does this module exist? Can't I modprobe it? I've got a module for my modem, which is an hsf modem and has a special driver, which is already installed. The pppd manual page says that it (pppd) works with one...(a ppp module) any suggestions? Thanks in advance for putting up with my repetitive questions.

In case anybody's keeping track, I got my modem to work. I was wrong about there being a special ppp module. What needed to happen was I needed to edit the file '/etc/ppp/pap-secrets' to include my hostname and password on the last line. For some reason I was not entering that data correctly... the dummy version of the file showed a spot for the password but not the hostname and I had to look in a doc file on my system at '/usr/share/ppp/pap-secrets' before I even knew that I had to put the hostname in at all. Pretty noobie-ish. I don't get why it worked so much easier on 2.4 though.
