Please note: The debian-volatile project has been discontinued with the Debian "Squeeze" release. See this announcement for details.

My Giant list has been updated for Squeeze.

For old PC with Etch installed

I found this useful guide for configuring aptitude update from Etch to Lenny (server edition):

http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/howto-...comment-154120

So, my /etc/apt/sources.list is:

# Main
deb http://ftp.iitm.ac.in/debian lenny main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.iitm.ac.in/debian lenny main contrib non-free
# Security
deb http://security.debian.org/ lenny/updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ lenny/updates main contrib non-free

# Main
deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ stable main non-free contrib
# Source
deb-src http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ stable main non-free contrib
# Security
deb http://security.debian.org/ stable/updates main contrib non-free

Angry Problem with initial sources.list installation (Debian 6.0)

I just installed Debian 6.0 as a VirtualBox 4 VM (running in a Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04 host), and was having trouble getting the sources settings to work. First, when I tried to check one of the boxes to select a source, the box would not accept a check. Second, a number of items (especially drbd-related) did not show up when I entered 'drbd' into the search box.

Comparing /etc/apt/sources.list with other, working versions, I found that:

1) The pattern 'deb http://ftp.us.debian.org' was replaced with 'deb http://http.us.debian.org'
2) The sequence 'squeeze contrib non-free main' was replaced with 'squeeze main contrib non-free'

Since I made these adjustments, I am able to check the selections and I can find the packages I was searching for.

Does anyone know how the initial installation could have had these errors, and what other variations are possible that will not be caught by the package manager, but will cause similar (or different) problems?

root@debian600:/etc/apt# diff sources.list.save sources.list

Hi donls
Don't know if this will help, I've been a linux user for 9 years and used Debian off and on but got lazy (and busy) and have used ubuntu for quite some time.
I wanted to get back to debian and knowing some of the problems, I decided to give myself an edge and found this website http://raphaelhertzog.com/products/debian-cd-dvd/ . He is a maintainer of both debian and ubuntu so buying the CD supports debian and it has saved me some grief. I put his feed on my google reader which is informitive.. I got a nice clean install and was able to add iceweasel 4 and virtual box later. Maury

So, Maury, is the DVD more reliable than the published one, or is it a supplement? Wondering, if the author knows of defects in the distro, can't they be repaired?

Ok, never mind -- I looked at the website. Looks like the DVD includes optional non-free components.

However, that wasn't why the sources list was out of order on my install. Or, I don't think it was. Maybe I need to download another copy and build another VM and see if sources.list builds correctly?
