First, you must tell us what distro you are running (and what version). This definitely sounds like a package management problem with missing dependencies.

Wow, same as me (except I run 32-bit). Lucky for you, I'm going to college for web design and I already have a functional LAMP installation. I think your try 'sudo apt-get update' and sudo apt-get upgrade' (just trying to cover all the bases here) and see if that helps. If not, you can try launching Synaptic and completely removing all PHP packages (Mark for complete removal). Then you can start fresh.

Speaking of which, I used the following walk-through to set up my server: http://wiki.debian.org/LaMp

Unhappy Same on latest Ubuntu

Same since a very long time on latest Ubuntu (11.10, 64bit, all updates installed).

Everything works, but my local Mailbox gets spammed with:

After installing the appropriate packages, like so:
php5-<library_missing> (example: php5-curl, php5-memcache etc), I get NO Errors in Log file, but problem still exists!!
What I get when I try to open http://localhost/something is sth like WSOD with some (few - 5-10) lines of php code only (in iceweasel it's WSOD - only in page source you can see the code which was cut-off)

I know I recently had an error like this occur due to messing around a bit with different sources and going back and forth. When you use 'apt-get remove' it doesn't usually delete any configuration files. So I suspect that is what helped cause some of these errors for me in that it was looking for files and versions which no longer existed. The solution in my case was to simply purge ('apt-get purge') some packages and reinstall them. Notably the php5* packages. Note that purging will remove existing configuration files. Be aware of what you are doing.

Thumbs up

Code:
PHP Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library '/usr/lib/php5/20090626/xsl.so'
is an indication of a missing package. I solved it by installing php5-xsl through the package manager. Am using ubuntu 12.0.4.

Cheers,
Simon.
