I think I've made up my partitioning plan:

SSD [128GB]:
  • / [40GB]
  • /home [88GB]
HDD [3TB]:
  • /data [2.8TB] (symlinked to /home/data)
  • /swap [8GB]
  • Leave the remaining ~0.2TB for safety reasons - e.g. if at some point I'd want to create Windows partitions
I'll also move /tmp to RAM (which I'll upgrade to at least 8GB).

Thanks for all the answers.

you can mount your HD directly to /home/data if you wish. I do not know if you really need 12 GB swap. Here are some hints: http://apcmag.com/how-to-maximise-ss...with-linux.htm also add /var/run and /var/lock (configure as tmpfs).
(and press YES if you really want to say thanks)

I just thought it won't hurt to add a little more just for safety, but you're probably right and I'll set on 8GB instead.

Well Linux still uses the old everything is a file Unix philosophy(Although I am sure Kay Sievers and lainart pottering would change that too if given half the chance.)
