Hi,
I have debian sarge on my system and it was running fine (infact excellent) till yesterday. I became ambitious and decided to install ksmoothdock for kde (version 3.2 I guess). Since a sarge debian package for ksmoothdock was not available I attempted installing using its sources.
When I ran ./configure, it complained about missing headers/libraries for XFree, QT, KDE, jpeg. I installed all of these using the "apt-get install". Eventually I was able to install the application and was able to use it also (no restart yet).
Today when I booted up my machine, it went to the KDE login screen but when I tried to login it gave this error -
" A critical error occured. Please look at KDM's logfile(s) for more information or contact your administrator."
I switched to the console screens also (using CTRL+ALT+F1), but it failed to take even root as login, i.e. did not go to the password stage even.
I restarted the PC and booted into the recovery mode. I logged in as root. The KDM log in /var/log/ did not give any info (it did not give full normal log though).
I checked auth.log in /var/log and it was complaining about some stuff. The output is -
localhost login[3509]: PAM unable to open dlopen(/lib/security/pam_securetty.so)
localhost login[3509]: PAM [dlerror: /lib/security/pam_securetty.so: cannot open shared object file: Input/output error]
localhost login[3509]: PAM adding faulty module: /lib/security/pam_securetty.so
localhost login[3509]: PAM unable to open dlopen(/lib/security/pam_nologin.so)
localhost login[3509]: PAM [dlerror: /lib/security/pam_nologin.so: cannot open shared object file: Input/output error]
localhost login[3509]: PAM adding faulty module: /lib/security/pam_nologin.so
I do not know what went wrong and how I got into this mess. Please help!!!!
Thanks
