Opera (11.60.1185) crash on Xfce under Debian Squeeze


hello,

recently i updated the opera browser using apt-get on my debian squeeze 'systems'...one running gnome and the other running xfce.

the machine running xfce desktop is having problems starting opera now after the upgrade to opera version 11.60.1185...it just crashes when you start the program.

the gnome machine is a happy camper...no issues whatsoever after the opera upgrade.

for your info. i have completely removed and re-installed opera more than once in an attempt to fix this issue...but the problem persists. (now i am sure that it was not a download/upgrade error)

what could be the problem? anyone else face this problem? will appreciate it if people can assist me in troubleshooting/figuring out a solution to this perplexing problem

opera is like an addiction once you get used to it, you do not want to use other browsers...except when sites mis-behave with opera! so would like to fix this issue asap

Did you try starting opera from the console to capture output of errors if any?

thanks for the prompt response and welcome eric.

i had not tried your suggestion... and now i have and this is what i get on the console:

opera [crash logging]: CRASH!!
/usr/lib/opera/opera got signal SIGSEGV at address 0813418B

Log was created here:
/var/tmp/crash20120115124923.txt
Killed

i had a look at the log file...did not make sense to me. anything that you can figure to what needs to be tried or done next?

Hello,

The SIGSEGV signal means that Opera crashed with a segmentation fault. Is there anything in that log? If so, please post it if it's not to big, if it is use pastebin. I've been searching a bit on Google about this and have found some recent posts mentioning the same behavior in this forum. The beginning is in Dutch but further down the line there are posts in English mentioning a bug in Opera in handling color depths. Might be worth checking it out.

i have not gone through it comprehensively...though what little i have gone through...i could not understand. and the text log file is 450 kb approx. so by text file standards...its big.

you want me to past it completely here? or should i attach the text log file?

hello,

the log file is 480 kb...and while trying to post it to the pastebin site it says i have exceeded the 500 kb limit...and need to upgrade to pro to remove this limitation.

LQ also has a 256 kb limit on text file attachments.

hmmm??

Could try and 0) compress, then uuencode it and then paste it or 1) use 'split' and attach it in two or three sections, else 2) attach it to a bug report to Opera (see http://www.opera.com/support/bugs/) and post the ticket URI here?

thanks for the options moderator.

i have opted to file a bug report on the opera site as suggested by you. after filing the report using the bug report wizard, all i have is an unique e-mail ID for reference?? ...which is also the mail ID where i am supposed to send the crash log file...and i did so.

there is no link to the bug report filed?

Opera is closed-source and there is no publicly available bug tracker. So you will have to wait.
You also can to go to the opera forums and open a thread there.

Also, reinstalling the program 99% sure wont help, because most likely the issue is not in the program itself, its in the users settings folder (~/.opera) or it is plugin-related (more exactly plugin-handling).
You should rename that folder and then launch opera - a new .opera folder will be recreated with default settings. If it works, then most likely some user setting file was either corrupted or it is handled differently by the newer version either you had some site in the last saved session that crashed opera. You can launch opera with the "-nosession" command line switch that disables loading the last opened tabs.

thanks for the suggestions gradinaruvasile.

i guess i will wait it out. i have already tried the opera settings folder delete and re-install process. the problem persists.

To download the latest prereleases. Be careful, the next generation "Opera-next" builds install in separate locations (and have user settings separate). You can install the "Opera" branded releases over your opera installation.

Disclaimer, I work for Opera.

What is your current color depth? We seem to have introduced a bug in 11.60 that causes Opera to crash on startup if the color depth is 16. We have a fix internally and intend to release an interim 11.61 build including the fix before 12.00 comes out.

@Sattvakarma What is the reference number. It should start DSK-??????. If you give it to me I will be able to view the report and depending on what information you have provided I might be able to give you more insight.

I have updated Opera to 11.61 and now it starts OK!
