i still do not understand why this will happen

i was trying to install openoffice using x terminal

can u lead me to a solutin to install open office.

Quote:
pacific:/home/pacific# apt-get install openoffice.org-base
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
openoffice.org-base: Depends: libhsqldb-java (>= 1.8.0.0-2) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: openoffice.org-java-common but it is not installable
E: Broken packages

apt-cache policy libhsqldb-java
Is an older version installed ? what version is available in your repositories ? the previous command should show the answer to both those queries.

Base is the Database portion of OpenOffice which requires Java to be installed in order for base to work.

From what I can see a version greater than or equal to that which is required is readily available in the repositories..

Code:
username@it-etch:~$ apt-cache policy libhsqldb-java
libhsqldb-java:
  Installed: 1.8.0.7-1etch1
  Candidate: 1.8.0.7-1etch1
  Version table:
 *** 1.8.0.7-1etch1 0
        500 http://ftp.uwsg.indiana.edu etch/main Packages
        500 http://security.debian.org etch/updates/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Do you still have the CDROM listed in your /etc/apt/sources.list ? if so you should comment it out. it's probably looking at the version that came on the CD rather than the latest version from the online repositories. Then update and try again.
