Hi, I have a new Knoppix HD install, which is based on Debian.
I'm having the problem that only the root has sound, none of the users do. I have researched this issue and verified that all the suggested solutions were in place, but I still have the problem.
The strange thing is that if I log into KDE as root, logout, and log back in as a user, I'll have sound until I physically reboot the computer.
Thanks for your help!
Here are my settings:
User@box: ~$ groups
User dialout fax voice cdrom floppy tape sudo audio dip video games users usb
sounds like your mixer settings are getting messed up. or root has the right mixer settings and they are loaded when you login as root. next time you are in kde with working sound, save the mixer settings.

You're right, it is the mixer. I was playing around in KMix and found the following: even though the Pcm button was lit (unmuted) at startup as user, muting Pcm and then unmuting it allowed the audio to play.
How can I save the mixer settings? I'm using OSS, not ALSA.

Cheers, but it was even simpler than that.
I edited a line in file:/home/user/.kde/share/config/kcmkmixrc from startkdeRestore=false to startkdeRestore=true and everything was perfect. Any changes to the mixer are now restored upon startup.
