On Squeeze - black screen after gdm loads

After entering runlevel 2 and gdm loads, I only get a black screen. I hear a beep that indicates gdm has loaded, but everything stays black. Trying to switch to a console using ctrl-alt-f1 does absolutely nothing.

At one point, I disabled gdm from starting in runlevel 2, and rebooted.

I then typed into tty2 "sleep 60 ; reboot"
and in tty1 "gdm" and hoped for a reboot if the graphical login didn't appear. No reboot occurred, my black screen remained.

I've issued acpi=off at kernel command line (from grub) and disabled all acpi services. That seemed to work for a few hours but now I get the black screen again every time. There's no option in the BIOS to switch from acpi to apm, so I've done all I can do on the software side of things.

I'm trying squeeze on a IBM Thinkpad T23; I've posted hardware specs and sources at http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi....php?p=4192873

The "black screen" (empty X session) is normal Xorg behavior (do blame xorg for this).
It replaced the usual (and more useful) black/white screen + X cursor.
I don't think your problem is X though.

Could you try starting X without GDM* (remove it).

*> Use either startx or start an X session + xterm from your root (xinit /usr/bin/xterm)

I didn't mean to blame X or gdm, just thought providing my Xorg log would be a logical thing to post.

I tried xinit /usr/bin/xterm but had the same problem, got a black/blank/frozen screen.

To correct an unrelated problem, alan_ri suggested I do a clean install of squeeze ( http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...00#post4191700 ), which I did.

The first time I booted after install, I chose recovery mode from the grub menu, at the sulogin problem, I logged in as root and disabled some unneeded services. I then executed "telinit 2" and got a frozen screen. I did a hard shut down and let the machine reboot normally into runlevel 2 and the gdm login screen came up fine. I spent a couple hours installing some packages and setting up the firmware needed to get my sound to work ( http://wiki.debian.org/snd-cs46xx ). I rebooted the system and again received the gdm login with no problem.

I then tried to shut down the machine with the hibernate option from the gnome logout menu. It seemed to start the process. After a few moments, nothing was written to the console and the machine had not powered down. I pressed the power button for a second, then got some console messages, and after a few seconds the laptop powered down. I restarted the laptop, and it resumed, but again seeming to stall, I pressed the power button, received some console messages, then the resume finished, giving me the desktop right as I had left it, logged in and with a gnome-terminal open.

Then I went to restart or shutdown (sorry, can't remember), and the process started but then received a dialog box saying that system configuration prevents me from performing this action while another user is logged in.

I figured maybe because I was logged in as root in a gnome-terminal window (was logged into the desktop session as a normal user). So instead of entering the root password to continue shutdown, I hit cancel to see if closing the gnome-terminal window would prevent the security message. After a few seconds, received a blank/black/frozen screen.

I had to do a hard shut-down, and after rebooting, had the same problem as before. Frozen screen in runlevel 2 a second after I get the console message that gdm is loading. Tried restarting two or three more times, but no go.

I had spent too much time on this old laptop, so after this, a few days ago, decided to go with a different distribution, one that I'm more familiar with. It seems to be working more smoothly now, and with acpi enabled I'm getting the desktop every time.

Thank you for your help, I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help to resolve this possible bug.
