nvidia Xorg woes

Hi;
I started a major project about a mounth ago: build a new Linux box. I've got an AMD64x2 4400 runing on an ASUS M/B w/ Sata HD and DVD 1Gig memory and a nvidia 6600LE vidio card. I'm runing the unstable 2.6.15 amd64 smp kernel
I can't get X (xorg) to start up. I've scoured many archives I have patched the linux-kernel to get it to see the dvd and I have patched and compiled the nvidia modules driver modules fixing a ioclt registration problem (thanks to all those who have documented there trials and endevours) but I still get a "failed to load module nvidia (module does not exist)" message from X and
if I modprobe the the nvidia module I get

NVRM: The NVIDIA probe routine was notcalled for i device(s)
NVRM: This can occur when a driver susch as rivafb or rivatv was
NVRM: loaded as obtained ownership of the NVIDIA device(s).
NVRM: Try unloading the rivfb(and/or the rivtv) kernel module
NVRM: (or reconfiguring your kernel without rivfb support), then
NVRM: try loading the NVIDIA kernel module again.
NVRM: no NVIDIA graphics adapter probed!
FATAL error inserting nvidia (/lib/modules/2.6.15 ......): no such device

Now, I don't have rivfb or rivtv configued in the kernel.
FYI Discover doesn't seem to see my video card either but I'm not sure
if it can see anytheing on a PCI-E bus.

Has any one had sucess traveling down these paths or can you point me to another module patch ?

thanks
