nvidia on Lenny only allows 640x480 resolution

Hi all,
I've finally managed to get the nvidia driver on my Lenny box.
However I've now found that I can't change resolution from 640x480, the nvidia panel shows this and 320x240 as the only resolution. The layout shows "hidden as under 600 pixels" If I go to gnome screen resolutions it only shows 640x480. If I plug a second monitor in it won't detect it.
I'm using NVIDIA-Linux-x86-180.51-pkg1.run, older versions appear not to work with Lenny crashing x on boot.
Can anyone advise how to change resolution on the nvidia in Lenny? Thanks

After installing nvidia drivers, you should not use the gnome-tool for configuring your resolution anymore. Instead, you should use the one Nvidia installs for you.

In Ubuntu/Gnome, you should find a shortcut under "System > Administration > NVIDIA X Server Settings".

Alternatively, open a console and type "nvidia-settings" (should be the same tool).

Configure your resolution and monitors from there. It works fine for me. A bit buggy with dual monitors, but still...

Good luck. I hope this helps.

Are you sure you are running the nvidia driver ? It sounds like you are using the VGA driver.

Could you post some information for us ?

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep autoconfigured

cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf | grep -i driver

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE

Hi all, should make myself a bit more clean.

I've tried to change resolution using the Nvidia setting, but it only allows 640x480, I tried gnome settings as sometimes in Etch if your gnome is set to a different resolution it stops Nvidia working correctly.

My results from
cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf | grep -i driver
Driver "mouse"
Driver "kbd"
Driver "nvidia"
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE
(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.
(II) Loading extension MIT-SCREEN-SAVER
(EE) Failed to load module "type1" (module does not exist, 0)

I should point out if I connect a single screen, that screen works great, correct resolution etc. However if I connect 2 screens via both heads of the card it fails, with one screen not seen and the second being locked at 640x480. If I change my harddrive over to my harddrive with an Etch build all works fine, so I know it's not hardware

Thanks

Ah I thought from your original post that you had ONE screen attached and it was stuck at 640x480.. totally different scenario.

I believe twinview configuration is covered in the README for the nvidia drive, if what Mega Man suggested doesn't work for you. .

There's obviously something going on with the new x-server from my reading. I've found a sort of work round, for anyone who has similar problems.

Boot with only one monitor attached, via the HDMI socket. It will start in a "true" resolution. After log in open the nvidia software. Plug in a second monitor via the the VGA socket. Then press the detect device button, it should detect the monitor. Then hit save to xorg button and reboot. Both monitors will work.

My only problem is it will only run the second monitor at a max 1280x800, even though nvidia devices say it's max res is 1280x1024? Well I'll try to work it out.
