Nvidia linux drivers removing resolutions

Why does nvidia driver keep removing my screen resolutions?
NVIDIA(0): No valid modes for <screen resolution>

No matter what screen resolution I give it, it removes it. Why?

I have a ps3 ubuntu so I borrowed a screen res from there but still no go. It does overscan but at least it fits on the screen.

I'm connecting my pc via dvi to hdmi cable. It's pushing everything slightly to the left. also the images looks huge. Similar to when you set a monitor to 640 x 480.

Is that a sign that my vertical refresh / horizontal sync is wrong? It was put into xconf by nvidia drivers.

If so then how can I make sure it's right? I can't seem to find it from google or tv manual

It's a sony KDL-V40A12U. It's running debian lenny

That's because someone decided that using a config file, like Unix does for the last 40+ years, is outdated, oldfashioned and should be replaced by the Win-OS system of configuring the graphiX each and every boot from the ground up by auto-detecting the attached hardware... In other words: there's no more xorg.conf file, so the nVidia driver has no place to look for it's native resolution... Up/downgrade to Etch, that does have a xorg.conf file...

Not by default anymore.
But the nvidia driver will generate an xorg.conf.
Also the third link in my sig shows how to generate an xorg.conf manually.

@linuxmandrake

It would help if you post the output of cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf and cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE
