i just tried to install debian sarge on my comp, and when i got to the part to partition my drive, it said that my hard drives can't be detected. what's wrong? i have 2 80gb sata drives. i'm already dual-booting windows and ubuntu, but i made a 15gb partition on one of the drives for debian.
The default sarge kernel is 2.4 which does not support sata. When you get to the boot: prompt enter linux26 and it will use the 2.6 kernel which supports sata.
ok, that worked. now, i got it installed, but no wm was configured. i did apt-get install kde, and after 10 minutes of downloading stuff it just went to blank screen. i rebooted and tried startx, but that didn't work. i decided to try to install xfce instead, so i did apt-get install xfce4, but i don't know the command to start it. anyone know? startx didn't work for it either (not sure if it's only for kde...?)
thanks
btw, grub detected both windows and kubuntu on my system already, so i didn't have to edit any grub files to get it to do so like many people were telling me i'd have to do.
The X server probably isn't correctly configured. Examine the log file /var/log/XFree86.0.logand see what X is having problems with. Have a look at your settings in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 in Ubuntu. Make a note of these settings and then to reconfigure XF86Config-4 in Sarge do dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 and use the settings.
problem is that ubuntu uses xorg.conf rather than xf86config-4. when i looked in sarge under /etc/X11/ there was no xf86config-4 and no xorg.conf either... do i have to create one or what?
