I don't know about configuring this stuff, but you probably need 'ipw3945d' and 'ipw3945-source'. You can search for stuff like that on the debian site at this page:

http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages

Just scroll to the bottom and enter 'ipw3945' into the box labeled 'Keyword' in the section labeled 'Search Contents of Packages', then make some selection like 'packages that contain files whose names contain the keyword' and you should find what you're looking for.

The prebuilt module is for Debian's kernel and won't work on knoppix's 2.6.19 kernel.

Install module-assistant, the headers for your kernel along with ipw3945d and the firmware. run m-a a-i ipw3945.

you need to install iwlwifi from intel to work properly. i have the same card, ipw3945 the ipw3945 drivers have been deprecated now. you can still find it at sourceforge with full instructions to install.

for the new better performing drivers you need to check the intel open source website. with instructions to download and install.
