no video file is opening
 

I just installed debian,I dont know what happend exactly,all the video files which can be opend in vlc player of xp,could not be opend(played)
in the vlc player of linux.
I took it to be some installation problem and i re-installed the player, even though there is no use,seeing this i later installed the Mplayer
even that doesnot played any video files.

ofcourse i m getting the audio but there is no video

the error i get is

if i press ok in the above screen shot .I m getting audio but there is no video.this is the same case with the vlc player.

I don't have any .mkv files myself.
Can you post a link to them and i will see if i can get them to play.

not only mkv it's the case with .flv also.how ever it is playing in smplayer but with very high brightness,and i dont find any clue to reduce the brightness

It would appear VLC should be able to play mkv files:

Also if you are trying Mplayer did you install the codecs package?

Yes vlc should play .mkv files (that is it can do that in windows) and i played some files mkv in ubuntu(vlc) i dont know what is wrong.how to install the .mkv codecs in Mplayer

Well i just downloaded an mkv clip from 'transformers'.
Plays just fine with VLC here.
Do you have graphics drivers installed?

and if it is the graphic drivers thing then how can smplayer do the job

Good point!.
But in the past i have found that Vlc will play dvd's even using the vesa driver.
If smplayer works for you use that!

In the VLC player, in the menu "Tools...Preferences...Video...", make sure that the "Enable Video" is ticked.
Also, you might have to play around with the drop-down menu for Output. The options there are something like: X11, OpenGL, etc. This is the selection area for output. Some may perform better, or in your case, not at all. X11 is a good, safe bet. And, has worked for me in the past.

I have just found how to adjust brightness with VLC:

Click on 'tools' then go to 'extended settings'
Click on the video effects tab.
Check the box 'image adjust'

You can then move the brightness slide.

Bare in mind that i'm using a different version of Vlc than you are in Stable.
It may be different in your version.
