No sound unless root

I've got an Audigy 2 soundcard and the emu10k driver is installed and working fine but only if I'm logged in as root. When I try and enable audio as a user it tell me I don't have permissions to /dev/mixer (i think). When I'm root the audio works fine, although I had to enable it at first, but I did the same as a user and it still won't work.

What can I do beside changing the permissions? Even if I do change the permission after a reboot they are changed back....

Are you using alsa or OSS... cause alsa you can define device permissions.

I've used the 2.6.5 kernel image from apt. I'll assume that it defaults to OSS....

Do one of the following:

The wrong way:

As root:

chown user:group /dev/dsp
chown user:group /dev/mixer (if you have it)

chmod 700 /dev/dsp
chmod 700 /dev/mixer (if you have it)

The Debian way:

As root:

adduser username audio
