No sound through browser

So have a fresh install of testing and am having problems with sound. In browser I cant hear anything.Youtube,Pandora,Spotify,etc.
I have Intel HD audio and i think system is using wrong output.I use the optical out to my home reciever.
In VLC and Audacious I didnt hear anything till I went into audio preference and set it to optical output.Programs like Smplayer wont work as it doesnt allow me to choose optical.Just the different audio.
I think I need to somehow make it system wide to use the optical out but dont know how do do that.
Not sure If my AMD card is at odds with Intel audio. My AMD card has HDMI audio.
Progms like Smplayer list alsa 0.0 -HDA Intel, alsa 0.1 -HDA,alsa 1.3 -HDA ATI HDMI

From vlc this is output liisted.
alsa debug: HDA Intel, ALC888 Digital IEC958 (S/PDIF) Digital Audio Output (iec958:CARD=Intel,DEV=0)

EDIT:Shortly after I posted it I got it worked out.I installed Pulse.Went into Pulse control panel and disabled AMD HDMI and set out put to Intel optical out.So sound is working.

Rather than resorting to pulseaudio you can set up alsa to choose the correct sound device to begin with: https://wiki.debian.org/ALSA#Troubleshooting
