No sound.

Just when I thought my hardware configuring woes were put to an end, I don't have any sound. Here is my lspci list.

Code:
debian:~# lspci | grep Audio
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)
And the aplay -l

Code:
debian:~# aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: HDA Generic [HDA Generic]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
I've been googling for hours to find a solution and havn't found anything worth trying out. Does anyone know what is going on or what's not going on with my sound?

ANY time I have a sound issue, I try first (as root):
Code:
alsaconf
to make sure the correct card is configured correctly.

Then:
Code:
alsamixer
Make sure everything is unmuted, and outputs are at a decent level (half to three-quarters max).

If you then have sound, save the settings with:
Code:
alsactl store
If not, post back and we'll go from there.

Last edited by brucehinrichs; 07-14-2010 at 01:38 PM. Reason: changed last command to alsactl store (from alsactl save)

Alsaconf is deprecated since... the alsa version that comes after the one in the stable repos.

Are you in the audio group? If on kde4, install kmix as well, else kde will remain silent.

Well I did what you said and to no avail I still have no sound. Here's a screenshot of me choosing the correct device. Any other ideas?

You posted before I could reply, how would I go about checking if my account is in the audio group?

Simply type groups in a terminal.
Also the following guide may help troubleshooting sound problems:

Good luck.....

hi

try simple mixer solution first in case yours is just muted or set too low
http://sidux.com/index.php?module=Wi...=MixerSettings

2) since you have intel if (1) failed next is intel codec
http://sidux.com/index.php?module=Wi...&tag=AlsaIntel

3) then normal trouble shooting
http://sidux.com/index.php?module=Wi...en&tag=NoSound

ignore xfce stuff in first link....I assume you are intelligent as you are using Debian?...heh heh

A bit of an update. After playing around with this situation for some time I finally decided to test my ear buds and check to see if any sound was coming out of them and lo and behold I can hear. Except when I pull the ear buds out of the laptop nothing comes through the speakers _except_ the system beeps. For example when you press the Back or down arrows in a console, you hear the beeps come through the laptop speakers but nothing else. Does anyone have an opinion on what I am experiencing?

What do you see in Alsamixer? Is everything enabled and turned up?

That screenshot is Gnome not KDE. Just doing my Sherlock Holmes bit.

How about System-settings -> Multimedia -> and then put the sound card to the top of the list?
