Unhappy "No screens found" error - Debian 4.0 & Nvidia 9800GTX

I just installed Debian 4.0, and it boots to a CLI after giving the error "No screens found."

I tried copying a working Xorg.conf file to the Debian installation, but it didn't change my luck.

Note that it said it installed successfully, but it never asked me for any other disks - it only installed from the first install DVD. Is this normal? (I selected to install all possible package categories listed EXCEPT "Laptop".)

Also, I use Wvdial to connect to the internet, but I discovered that it is not installed on Debian. I can't install it via apt-get because I would have to connect to the internet to do that...

Any bright ideas?

Still no luck

I just ran through

dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

as root; still no luck.

I'd first check to make sure everything is ok in you xorg.conf file. I know you said it was working, but check again. Recently I put End instead of EndSection, and purged xorg 2 before checking the xorg.conf file.

Yes, I just tested it on Kubuntu; it works for it.

Besides, I'm not sure how it could fail, because I used the "cp" command to copy it directly from Kubuntu to Debian (while in Debian).

Many reboots and still no luck...

check to make sure the nv driver supports your nvidia chipset. If not, change driver to vesa, set resolution to a vesa friendly 1280x1024 and go download the nvidia binaries.

FYI nv on my etch box doesn't support any of the 9xxx according to man nv.

Lightbulb It's working.

Thanks everyone,

I tried a command I learned somewhere from someone, and it installed the kernel source for me, which enabled me to use the Nvidia installer to install the driver.

In case it helps anyone else, that command is/was:
Code:
apt-get install kernel-headers-`uname -r`
(Be sure to run as root.)

Note: The "uname -r" part is enclosed in what I believe are called "backticks" - not single quotation marks. Use the key in the upper-left of the keyboard, next to the number 1 and the [Tab] key.
