Can we see the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 you are using there is a problem with the screens section in it. You may just have to frame buffer option it should not be necessary.
Code:
ABI class: XFree86 Video Driver, version 0.4
 (**) NV(0): Option "UseFBDev" "true"
 (==) NV(0): Using HW cursor
 (**) NV(0): Using framebuffer device
 (II) Loading sub module "fbdevhw"
 (II) LoadModule: "fbdevhw"

"Hi, I just installed Debian Linux"

Which Debian?, Woody, Sarge, Sid? Which kernel, 2.2, 2.4, 2.6?

"and when I try to startx i get a fatal error no screens found."
"(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration."

usually this denotes a bad X configuration.

Sections 9 and 10 of this article, goes step by step to configure X.

OR

as root install:

#apt-get install x-window-system discover mdetect read-edid icewm icewm-themes
#dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

and let the system autodetect

reboot

Ok, wow it was the buffer, I must have kept overlooking the option when changing things.

Thanks You
