No Key available for root file system

Hi Everybody,

I´m fairly new to Debian (approx. 5 weeks). Before I used Fedora (6 Months) and Ubuntu (3 yrs).

I am running Debian Squeeze - 2.6.32-5-amd64

My Problem:
When I tried to decrypt my encrypted partition this morning, my key was not accepted. After several attempts (making sure it was not a typo) I get this:

Code:
No Key available for root file system ...done
Gave up waitint for root device. Common problems:
- Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
- check rootdelay
- check root
-missing modules (cat/proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! /dev/mapper/deb--serv-root does not exist. Dropping to a shell!
BusyBox...built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands
/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off
(initramfs)
I have read some things on Google about wrong mapping. However, I did not fully understand how to (even) try to tackle a possible fix. I´m stuck.

BIOS: Boot Menu
4: ATA HDD0: Corsair CSSD-F240GB2-(S1)
5: PCI LAN: IBA GE Slot 00C8 v1351

Can anyone help me or at least point me in some direction?
Thank you in advance.

Please list everything that has changed on the system since the last time it successfully booted. Also, how was the system shut down?

Hi smallpond,

thank you for replying. I have tried to gather some information bu was not able to. The whole partition was encrypted, I could not even boot the system anymore.

After consulting some friends (still not able to fix the issue) I gave up and re-installed the system. I had a backup.
The worst thing is, I cannot write a bug report. This should not happen with Debian Stable.

My recommendation (what I hav learned from this):
Never ever encrypt the whole partition, focus only on the user-directory when it comes to encryption.

Probably a good idea to have OS and home dir on separate partitions anyway. It makes upgrades easier too.
