Next stable release?

I see Debian 3.1 on Linux Magazine - does anyone know when the next stable release can be released?

The next stable released "when it's done". The next Stable release is Sarge, which is currently tagged as Testing. You can install Sarge now, a lot of people run it with few - if any - problems.

Sid, testing, etc.

Hello Unholy,

I warmly recommend you to try a Debian if you have the opportunity to do so. ;)
Debian has an excellent reputation. You can trust it, and have real fun with it!

To make your choice, you might want to have a look here:
http://www.debian.org/releases/

Personnaly I installed a Woody 3.0r2 from Internet, then upgraded to Sid (Internet as well).
The first steps of the installation are using floppies (4 floppies I think).
I was really impressed by the efficiency and (very relative) simplicity of the installation.

Now I'm very happy with Debian Sid.
But be very careful, Sid is the development version (the counterpart of Mandrake 'Cooker' I think).

As of today, the Debian version recommended for a desktop PC is on the "Testing" branch.
It will give you a good idea of what Sarge will be when it is released.

Have fun! :)
Sylvain.

I think sarge will be released in several months, but I have read there are some delays. Actually, no-one knows.

It doesn't really matter actually, you can install sarge as well. If you want to try Debian, I would recommend sarge: the stable woody is quite outdated (especially a problem if you have new hardware), doesn't have nice good modern looks :), and so on. The debian installer has been rewritten, and is quite finished now. It will make installing easier. Take a look at the installation manual before starting. Succes!
