Newly installed Nvidia drivers still won't start Xorg - was 'Error I've never seen'
I first posted about my problems trying to install the Nvidia drivers in this thread.
I gave up, re-netinstalled Debian Etch, installed a bunch of libraries and other stuff (if you deem it relevant I'll find out exactly what), and was able to successfully run "m-a a-i nvidia".
I altered my Xorg.conf file with the information about my monitor and the video card. And X still wouldn't start.
This is my Xorg.0.log:

I've cut it down a lot. Does anyone have some suggestions as to what might be happening?
Is "Error I've never seen" the message returned by the X server? The log you posted contains no errors, just warnings (WW) and information (II). Errors are preceded by (EE). Take a look at the log again and see if there are any or post the entire xorg.0.log.
When I attempted to start Xorg, the screen went black or blank, and the monitor cycled on and off as if it had stopped receiving data from the computer.
The original error message occurred when I was attempting to compile the kernel. I would attempt 'make menuconfig' in /usr/src/linux (or wherever I'm supposed to do that) and get the error message.
Like I said, I got frustrated and completely re-installed the system. I don't know exactly which program or library that I installed prior to attempting to run 'm-a a-i nvidia' allowed it to work successfully. But I can post that tomorrow if it would be helpful.
well it looks like you have a lot libs missing, what I recomend is that you make
#apt-get remove xserver-xorg-* xorg*
to unistall all these mess, and then you re-install it
#apt-get install xserver-xorg* xorg*
After you may need to install one or two packages, this will depend on you system, you can look at the log for this information and then apr-get install it.
The only thing I see you "missing" are some fonts. Not uncommon and not a big deal. You can comment out those lines in xorg.conf. The fact that there are no errors reported by X means its probably a configuration problem. What happens when you zap X with Ctrl-Alt-Bksp? You could also login to a terminal as root and execute `nvidia-bug-report.sh`.
The one odd item that jumps out at me is your default resolution of 1280x768 that's a very odd resolution.. are you running a wide screen LCD monitor ?
Normal resolutions are as typically follows..
1280x1024
1024x768
800x600
If you throw a bizarre resolution at your monitor that it can't understand it might just shut down like it's not receiving a signal..

I believe you nailed the problem, farslayer! I have a normal, cheap yumcha 19" CRT monitor.
Upon rebooting tonight, the X server started successfully but looked awful. I changed the resolution to 1024x768 and now it looks much, much better.
Why did the X server successfully start when I rebooted instead of when I originally typed 'startx'? I haven't the faintest idea.
Right now, I don't care. I'm going to go download episode 77 of RedvsBlue and enjoy it before season 5 starts.
