newbie question

Hello,

I am completely new to linux so this may sound silly to some of you. I installed Debian the other day on an old computer (PII 450Mhz - 256Mb Ram). It all went fine (I thought) until I tried to reboot. I entered my login info, no problems there, it went through the KDE start sequence and as soon as it said 'initializing peripherals', the screen goes blank for a second and BAM im in the login screen again... any ideas on how to solve this??

i would think that kde is crashing somehow... when you're putting in login details, is this in a graphical login or a test based one? if it's a graphical login, switch to a console by hitting Ctrl + Alt + F2 and try logging in there, see if that's possible

it's a mouse problem, i think. KDE needs a mouse to startup. If you have installed one and is correctly plugged into your computer. reconfigure /etc/X11/XConfig86(-4).conf

why should a mouse be at fault? could be a whole load of things.....

when whatever it is crashes out, look at the end of /var/log/messages and /var/log/XFree86.0.log (if you can get in on a console, run "tail /var/log...." to see the end, this might give you a few pointers as to what's dying.

wrong sentence could be mouse problem. Experience tells me it's almost always the mouse...

I'm having the same problem. I can login as root, but not as a particular user. It starts to login (I see the debian splash screen) then it goes blank for a second and returns me to the login screen. It seems like X is crashing, but only with that one user. other users and root works fine.
