New wheezy install doesn't see usb right

This is a wheezy install that is up to date. If I type lsusb I can see the devices plugged in via usb, but, for example, plugging in a smartphone does not open up the program picker that would allow me to choose fstop or pcmanfm (just an example). I haven't tried a printer with this laptop yet. The OS install went without a hitch, BUT I started with Squeeze and full-upgraded to wheezy. That I'm guessing is the start of my problem.

I thought it was a udev problem, but when I go to /etc/udev/ there is a 'rules.d' directory. For no particular reason I typed '# dpkg-reconfigure udev'. I got the following output:

Code:
# dpkg-reconfigure udev
[ ok ] Stopping the hotplug events dispatcher: udevd.
[ ok ] Starting the hotplug events dispatcher: udevd.
update-initramfs: deferring update (trigger activated)
Otherwise the install seems to be fine. I'm using xfce4. My kernel is from liquorix. Thanks in advance for looking at this and any help.

Never mind. I forgot to look at the 'Removable Drives and Media' app. That does what I want. Thanks anyway.
