new kernel and internet

after installing 2.4.22 in woody, everything works, except internet. any thoughts?

there is a dsl modem&router and splits in four ways. in one of them iam (or used to be) connected. My ehternet card is a Realtek and is the onboard card of GA-7kT600. any help?

Did you compile the kernel yourself? Looks like you have included the Realtek support into the kernel. Using modprobe will give an error because it's not a module but part of the kernel. Looks like it's working fine by the report from ifconfig. This is a network problem. Were you using dhcp or static addresses? You probably need to check how you have setup network support in the kernel. eg were you using ipmasq and do you have support for this in the kernel?

Hi there. thanks for the reply. I did compile the kernel myself, and i am using dhcp. unfortunately i do not know how to check if i have newtwork support in the kernel. could u tell me what to do, so i could post the message to you?

To check what your network settings are open the file /boot/config-2.4.22-xx where xx is the version you are using. Go down the list to network and IP settings. I am no network guru and perhaps you should put the same question in the network section.

Do a print of the old config and the new and compare line by line especially on the network stuff to see where the differences lie. I still think you should post under networking. I am not sure how you have setup the connection with the router. I am no expert in this field. The router should be using dhcp as well and should allocate an address to your machine and then you should be able to ping internet addresses.

under networking options, keep config_netfilter set to y.
but also set net_filter to y.
now compile the kernel again.

having both those options set to y allowed me to use dhcp through my router with no problems. you might want to try the same.
