New kernel 2.4.26 causes kernel panic

I just compiled a new kernel and everything went well, although I might have gotten an error while it was compiling a module I don't need. but my problem is when I boot it says:

VFS: Cannot open root device "hde1" or 21:01
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel Panic: VFS: unable to mount root fs on 21:01

I think i need it to use 33:01 instead of 21:01 and i tried putting the boot option with root=/dev/hde1 when i boot, but thats when i get the above error

My motherboard is an ASUS K7V and i am using the onboard Promise controller to boot the kernel.
