New graphical problem

Hello all,

I installed Debian 6.0.4 on my Dell XPS 502L. I had 2 initial problems, which where no sound at all and missing screen resolutions...

I've search the net and found that I could install the new kernel 2.6.39-bpo.2-amd64. I installed it and now my 2 problems disappeared. Except now my graphics work very slow!!

Can someone help me?

Thanks a lot.

At first you have to help us with giving more information on your system.
Which graphics hardware do you have?
Which driver are you using?

This seems to be a laptop with Optimus technology, sorry I can't help with that.

Thank you anyway...

My videos don't work either, and it's not a plugin problem, because with the other kernel, they play fine...

Can someone help me?

What driver is used in your system for video card? Maybe it's a problem with it.
Try lsmod command (as root).
Optimus, if I remember correctly, is a technology that uses two graphics cards, an integrated Intel ( in the chipset or the processor itself, do not know exactly) and a dedicated Nvidia.
The idea is that the system uses integrated graphics processor when not running programs that require more resources and then switches to dedicated GPU (Nvidia) when you need more graphics processing power.
Check and the power management settings.
I think it's a problem with video driver. It's just an opinion, it is likely that I'm wrong.

I see from your output that the system uses the Nouveau driver. I asked around and it seems that Optimus is not supported in Linux.
Try this: search if there is a physical switch somewhere on the laptop. That switch, if any, allows you to choose what video card to be used by system (Intel or Nvidia). I understand that this switch is called mux.
If the switch does not exist, is much harder. Here I have no idea. You can, however, in this case, search the Internet after the words switcheroo optimus. However, if this switch is, choose NVidia, since you have the Nouveau driver.
What laptop do you have (model, etc.)?
