Debian-Installer release candidate 3

The Debian Installer team is proud to announce the third release candidate of the Debian Installer for Debian GNU/Linux Sarge. We love doing this so much that we couldn't resist updating the installer one more time before the official release of Debian 3.1.

The most significant change in this release are updated versions of all kernels that include numerous security fixes. Also, users of the hppa architecture, please note that the 2.6 kernel is now used by default, and the 2.4 kernel is no longer available for hppa.

For users of Microsoft OSes, we're pleased to include a new version of parted in this version of the installer, which should do much better at keeping your Windows OS bootable when partitioning for Debian.

Of course this release also includes three months of improvements to the software in Debian sarge.

We've also spent the last few months fixing all the other errata items from rc2, along with many other bugs, polishing the documentation, and in general making this the most spiffy new Debian Installer release ever. Come and get it!

Good news. I wish I had it last week when the installer made windows un-bootable. I was unaware that it was a bug in parted. I hope Debian is able to release soon. It is long overdue.

I think they are coming to the realization that if they don't release more often, it will be detrimental for Debian itself and the clones based on it. Too many plataforms, in my opinion. Ubuntu has the right idea, IMO, every 6 mos.

Debian is solid, extremely fast on old hardware, and gives you the option of just installing what you want. Here in Panama, it's considered tops.

I'm having it downloaded and burn by my nephew, so i can give it a spin. hehe!

There was a post on slashdot yesterday that linked: http://lists.userlinux.com/pipermail...ry/007223.html from Bruce Perens on a userlinux list urging everyone to stop working on userlinux and instead focus on fixing bugs in Debian so that Sarge can be released. I think a release every year would be great. Even every two years maximum. Woody was released in July 2002 and is now way out of date. What Debian achieves is in fact astounding in my opinion. However, without releasing more often, they run the risk of becoming irrelevant. The spin offs will splinter away from Debian and users will migrate to whatever works best. I hope Sarge comes out soon. I think it is a fantastic and very flexible platform.

I just installed Sarge with the net-installer-rc3, everything is the same except that the apps and kernels are updated by default. After trying a dist-upgrade there is nothing to updgrade. The default 2.4 kernel is 2.4.27-2-386 (i forgot to look at the 2.6) . I supposed there is a bunch of security patches involved there. Not bad, real fast installation!
