New debian install question
I just built myself a new 'puter and am going through the install process. One snag is that my onboard doesn't work, and alsaconf doesn't find anything. I have an asus p5e-vm mobo and the sound is realtek alc883. Any input would be appreciated, Thanks guys.

Which Debian are you installing? Etch? Lenny has a later install kernel and recognises more hardware.

I'm using etch. I don't recall during the install process being given a choice to use etch, lenny, etc. How do I switch to lenny? Thx.

It'll probably be easier to just reinstall. The easiest thing to do is a net install, using the netinst image. This will require your computer to have good access to the internet during install; generally by running a cable from the computer from your router. So, just go to this page, http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/, select your hardware under where it says "netinst (generally 135-175 MB) CD images", burn it to CD as an image, and boot from it. It will take you through the install, and hopefully the rest of your hardware will be recognised. You'll probably have the usual problems with configuring wireless, so just yell for help when you need it.
If you have the usual PC and don't want to install 64-bit, then just use this link: http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/le...86-netinst.iso |
Either use a netinstall or one of the base install CD iso's like KDE-1 or XFCE-1. That will install your system, GUI, etc, no need for a constant internet connection, and its pretty configurable. Doesn't take up much space to start off with.

I did a net install, does it give you a choice of etch or lenny during the process? Thanks.

Okay, I'm downloading lenny right now. We'll see how that goes. Thx.

Just to put in my 2 cents. I've been using the businesscard install for lenny recently and at one point it actually gives you a choice of stable, testing or unstable. Can't beat that.

Just finished the new lenny install. Sound works and I didn't have to mod my Xorg.conf either. There is quite a difference between the two. Thanks guys.

Glad to help!

now to get lm_sensors working in gkrellm!

run sensors-detect

Well, I've got RMA my mobo! Which sucks. After having only had lenny working for a couple of hours that screen starts showing a lot of artifacts so I restart it. Well, it won't even post the bios. I've tried resetting the board, nothin'. That's so frustrating. Oh well, back to newegg it goes. Thanks again.
