The entire reason I want to go the the newer kernel is I heard that it has better support for my wireless card which I can't get working for the life of me (intel 3945). and I also can't get sound to come out of my headphone jack which I read somewhere is fixed in later kernels because of added support. Maybe I will just download the newer kernel and re-install. Debian is just a goof around platform for me so that I can learn linux until I am proficient enough to actually switch over to it all the time.

Makes sense just check to see if you have all the packages needed at the required versions listed on the page for the 2.6.20 kernel most times newer kernel requires newer udev package but I see it is the same in both testing (lenny) and unstable.

Code:
>$ apt-cache policy udev
udev:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 0.105-4
  Version table:
     0.105-4 0
        990 http://ftp2.de.debian.org testing/main Packages
        600 http://ftp2.de.debian.org sid/main Packages
