need advice for VNC-apps

hi,
can you recommend me VNC server and client for debian. At the moment (since two days :-) ) i`m using vino as a server and vinagre as client (or is it vice versa?, lol).
My main interest is to be fast, as the connection is quite bad.

If you know bout tutorials, how-to`s etc. : i`m all ears.

A recommendation for a similar windows-app (but free as in beer) would be nice too.

thanks

If you're asking this question, then you've probably got a chance of escaping VNC altogether. it is evil. I'd personally recommend NX from nomachine.org does everything and much much more across all necessary platforms.

ok, thanks. i found the download-side and guess it is correct:
http://www.nomachine.com/download.php
it will need some days to read into it. from the first view i cant find the windows-server-side, but guess i will find it with further reading ( ? ).

"it is evil"
:-) . i guess you refer to security-issues with VNC? or is it that bad (like in slow...)? Well i just try it over here, at home, to have a look how it works, but its a good hint.
thanks for your link/tip. i will try to escape :-) .

Security mainly, but also control. VNC has no session control, sessions will sit there forever, and you will have no idea how many people are running on it. Also VNC does does handle sound, printers, shared drives etc...

For windows servers, there is no need, just use Remote Desktop. The nxclient software can be a client for RDP as well so you still have a common client to use.

ok, i could need a bit of help. I havent read that much of the docu now, as i couldnt find one (how-to or such).

I installed nxclient; nxnode and nxserver.
The host is debian/gnu/linux and i want to connect to linux-mint in virtualbox.
I installed nxclient; nxnode and nxserver on both.

So i ran /usr/NX/bin/nxclient from debian.
I was asked a few questions and answered them as following:
Under general i set
the IP of linux-mint as server host and the port as 22
Desktop as VNC
and configured it like this:
host: linux-mint:0

I tried different other settings, like 5900 as a port or linux-mint:1 and so forth, but i get:
a) NX-window opens and closes in an instant
b)NX-window opens and tells me it cant set the RFB passwd, i shall contact my admin :-)

Ok, null problemo, just a few headaches.
If one of you is seeing something obvious i am doing wrong let me know.
Else a hint for a docu/how-to or such would be good.
(but i would like to be able to understand it :-)

thanks for any help

ok, i had to install vnc4server in virtualbox-linux and the error-message about the RFB-password vanished. dont ask me more :-) Its still difficult though i was (finally) able to connect.

-
The graphics is a bit "slow". Say if i move a window it first disappers (quite slow) and is getting build up new at the new position.
Is that the way it is or do i need to configure that somewhere?

greetings

you installed nxserver, yet just using the client, and sticking with the vnc server? Maybe you missed that nx does NOT need vnc in any way at all, if you're picking "vnc" in nxlicent, you're doing it wrong.

ok, i take it as a friendly way of saying rtfm
I finally found this:
http://www.nomachine.com/documents/getting-started.php
7.2 Starting a session
and via google the way to start fluxbox (i had to enter /usr/bin/fluxbox).

You were right: i first thought it would replace VNC, but when running it i thought again i would need it...so i was doing it wrong.

and its very stable and fast now.
thanks

It can be fiddlier to get running, especially if you replace the default rsa keys with your own, but the more you use it, and understand the clever way it starts everything up over ssh automatically and the likes, the more you'll like it and be glad that you use it.

This is how i did it

i was using NX, but the server only allows 2 clients, so i decide to use FREENX

Repos

##########
# FREENX #
##########
#deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/freenx-team/ubuntu intrepid main
#deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/freenx-team/ubuntu intrepid main

then you just need to do is

Code:
aptitude install freenx
Still using the Windows Cliente from NOMACHINE.

Its Running great

Absolutely right to use FreeNX in that situation. People generally think that ALL nomachine servers are commercial, and not just the "terminal services" equivalent, and end up using freenx for no benefit, but with a bit of a ball-ache as it's less friendly and intuitive.

OMG
just kidding.

I had a lot of trouble after i replaced xdm again with slim. It doesn`t seem to work with slim (for me), after i re-installed xdm it works now again.

So, i somehow could need a docu or better some how-to`s. The ones i find on nomachines web-side are not that self-explaining.
One of you got a link for me?

btw. i got a question:
When i make use of Unix->Custom(/usr/bin/fluxbox) nxclient seems to open a completely independent session. With a different configuration (background, style, etc). I may work in both at the same time, but they doesnt seem to be interested in each other.
Is that the way that it is or am i doing it wrong? I would prefer having got the both sessions runs simultanious (like when i use VNC), if that is possible.

thanks anyway, it will need some time i guess

edit:
ok, i needed to choose "shadow"-session under Destkop choices to get a simultanious session. all cool now. learning mode.
