must re-run alsaconf to get sound

I am running debian sarge with a 2.6.10 kernel.
I have a Compaq x1000 laptop with Intel 810 sound.

Everytime I reboot i have to run alsaconf to get any sound.
Any ideas why this isnt perminant?

Try 'alsactl store'. It should store the current mixer settings.

wow! i didn't know you could configure sound on debian using alsaconf!! I am new to debian and jsut moved one day ago from slackware. Slackware uses alsaconf, and it makes configuring the soudncard so easy! great, so debian uses it to....

Try using a mixer to increase the volume (eg. alsamixer from terminal or volume control).

Do you have 2 soundcards installed btw (like an integrated one and a pci card)?

Oh well, alsaconf is part of alsa-project, so I guess it can be used anywhere where alsa is installed. =)

yup, its application specific, not distro specific. You'd be suprised how often this is the case.

fatman.
If you leave your computer for say, one minute after you are in your desktop, then can you get your sound to work? When I boot, and get to the desktop (kde) if I try and run xmms straight away, i get an error about cant connect to device or something. I think its because of that sound you get when kde loads, kde is using the soundcard, and mine can only handle one input at a time (there is a plugin that will fix that-dmix if you have the time), so then if I wait a while, then xmms will work.

rerun alsaconf each reboot

I have an old ISA onboard sound card. I had to add the module to the /etc/modules file. I added a line

snd_cs-4236

to the file. Alsaconf loads all the modules and tries them but alsa doesn't when it's booting.
