Howto install Multimedia Codecs for Lenny with Gnome?

The following are the available options for package installs. Please note that each

main application will also get all required codecs and libs added automatically, 

so there's no need to manually install the specific codecs unless you want to.



Exoodles believes that your Debian distribution level is: unstable

and will install packages using the package manager: apt-get



You can return to this main menu to pick from another group to install

more packages, then to exit, just hit the quit number and the script will exit.



There are 3 main types of programs, which will require libraries and packages from the

following desktops, or none, in the case of CLI tools. The amount of libraries required

varies application to application, but you will see what will be added for each package

and can decide whether to install it all or not.

QT/KDE; GTK/Gnome; CLI (command line tools). The script will note which applies. 



Check each subsection for complete package list.

    acroread mozilla plugin, mplayer mozilla plugin, vlc mozilla plugin.



2 - codecs-plugins libdvdcss, ffmpeg, flac, gstreamer-plugins, lame, vorbis-tools, w32codecs

3 - editing-authoring brasero, k3b, k9copy, lxdvdrip, mencoder, qdvdauthor, xdvdshrink

4 - media-players-audio aqualung, amarok, audacious, banshee, gmusicbrowser, 

    quod-libet, streamtuner

5 - media-players-video mplayer, kaffeine, vlc, xine

6 - miscellaneous-media abcde, acroread, audacity, evince-gtk, Java, streamripper



7 - quit Exit script.

Thx, but howto install ALL codecs?
Is it enough to install w32codecs and libdvdcss2?

It depends on what media player you use.

Totem uses gstreamer-plugins,

vlc and mplayer use ffmpeg.

For the web browser you can use vlc-mozilla, totem-mozilla or mplayerplug-in on Stable or gecko-mediaplayer on testing and sid.

libdvdcss2 is needed to play dvds.

Various media players use different plugins so it really depends on what apps you use. There is no "ALL codecs".

My browser plugins:
Installed Plugins: (10)
- Default Plugin
- DivX Browser Plug-In
- Helix DNA Plugin: RealPlayer G2 Plug-In Compatible
- Java(TM) Plug-in 1.6.0_20
- mplayerplug-in is now gecko-mediaplayer 0.9.9.2
- OpenOffice.org Plug-in
- QuickTime Plug-in 7.6.4
- RealPlayer 9
- Shockwave Flash
- Windows Media Player Plug-in

most of them come from gecko-mediaplayer. if you want real realplayer you need to download it from http://www.real.com/realplayer/linux

I just installed Lenny on my laptop, and was playing .avi files without adding any additional software.

Which player are u using?

I used Totem, the default player. Just double clicked on the .avi file, and it fired right up.
I searched for codec files via Synaptic PM, now that I think about it, and installed one codec for decoding mpeg 1,2,&3 audio streams. Can`t recall which one it was though. If you`re having trouble getting videos or mp3s to play, search for the formats you want to use (+codec) in Synaptic. You should find what you need with little trouble.

For Totem:
* gst-plugins-base
the basic and essential plug-ins for GStreamer
* gstreamer0.10-plugins-good
the plug-ins for most Open formats
* gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly
good-quality plug-ins that might pose distribution problems, needed for DVD playback
* gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad
a set of plug-ins that need more work, needed for DVD playback as well
* gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg
FFmpeg-based plug-in, contains all the basic decoders for popular codecs, such as DivX and WMV
Other gstreamer plugins you may want:
gstreamer0.10-lame - GStreamer lame plugin ( in the debian-multimedia.org repo)
gstreamer0.10-x264 - GStreamer x264 plugin ( in the debian-multimedia.org repo)
gstreamer0.10-fluendo-mp3 - Fluendo mp3 decoder GStreamer plugin

Totem should pull everything in it needs other than the last three plugins listed above.

For mplayer install it and ffmpeg from debian-multimedia.org along with libdvdcss2

if you prefer vlc install it and ffmpeg from the normal Debian repo, and libdvdcss2 from dmm repo.
