Multicard Reader Problem

Hello,

I am trying to get a multi card reader to work with my sid system.
2.6.18-2-686 #1 SMP. I am using a DH800 motherboard with onboard usb.

I had this reader working on my other system with sid. kernel 2.4.X

I have hotplug installed but not udev. When I try and install udev apt
wants to remove hotplug. I mention this because I read some pages while
googling that said to have both udev and hotplug installed.

I have this added to my fstab and added the appropriate directories to
/mnt.

/dev/sda /mnt/flash1 vfat noauto,user 0 0 /dev/sdb /mnt/flash2 vfat
noauto,user 0 0 /dev/sdc /mnt/SD_Reader vfat noauto,user 0 0 /dev/sdd
/mnt/Memory_Stick vfat noauto,user 0 0

dmesg is attached to the bottom of this post.

Both /proc/bus/usb/devices and /proc/scsi/scsi are empty files.

This was a snap to get working under sid 2.4.X using http://www.cs.sfu.ca/~ggbaker/personal/cf-linux.

I am out of ideas. I have tried everything on that page. I would very much appriciate your opinions.

Thank you,
Steve

With a media card plugged in what is the output from the command ' fdisk -l '?
You might download the rescan-scsi-bus script from here and run it to see if they come up then. http://www.garloff.de/kurt/linux/

All the needed modules seemed to be there.
Question, I see uhci-hcd which is for 1.0-1.1 USB controllers and ehci-hcd which is for 2.0 usb controllers. Have you tried other USB ports like if there are some in the front and others in the rear?

Last thought is maybe the kernel requires multilun support in the kernel. Not sure how to see if it is already there or not. Check this most on what I am talking about. http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...331#post498331

I have a card that I used in my old system. I put it in and rebooted. Same results. Even sg_map shows the same info. I also tried turning off the onboard usb in the bios but it quit seeing the card alltogether.

Hi again Brian,

Thanks for hanging in there with me.

As per the post you mentioned it seems like my multilun is activated. Am I wrong here?

Thank you Brian.

I am actually glad to hear that. I was afraid I overlooked something simple as I'm not too experienced with Linux.

Thanks again and have a Great Holiday.

Got it. Just thought I'd post the solution. I used alt.os.linux.debian

The answer was

> Drop hotplug. It's obsoleted and udev does it right. Not same problems
> with timing on loading drivers etc. You culd add scripts to udev to run
> when a device is located. There are some problems with some hardware
> about not notice when media is inserted and removed. But that can be
> handled manually through commands or GUI

I apt-get installed udev and it had bugs listed. I use this box for work and didn't really want to risk it but what the heck. I googled the bug and found a potential remedy.

> Let's try a shot in the dark, what happens if you change it this way?
> Please test with multiple reboots.

Anyway for what I believed was safety I installed update-initramfs. I ran it using -t -u to take over the file and update it too.

I also did this
> mkdir -p /dev/.udev/db/
> mkdir -p /dev/.udev/queue/

Don't know if the last part helped or not but I found it on Google.

Then I rebooted to be sure it would still boot. Ended up changing the following in my fstab:

/dev/sdc /mnt/SD_Reader vfat noauto,user 0 0
to read
/dev/sdc1 /mnt/SD_Reader auto noauto,user 0 0

I just used auto because I was playing with it and it worked so what the heck.

Anyway I hope this information helps someone else.

Thanks again for the help Brian1.

Happy Holidays.
Steve
