I moved my /home to a new hard drive this morning and I'm having some problems. I used Norton Ghost. I was copying from a "failing" 50gb scsi drive to a 73gb scsi drive.
After Ghosting the drive, everything seemed normal and I got to the GDM login for Gnome, typed in my username and password hit enter like usual... The "Debian" logo popped up with the first "two" icons in the lower left and then the pc hung at that point seemingly forever! Finally, the "ear" icon and the last icon popped up and Gnome started normally. Things "seem" to be fine except for the extremely long startup of Gnome.
I have a number of errors in my .xsession-errors file. Here is "some" of it with some cuts and explanations:
/etc/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup...
SESSION_MANAGER=local/Debian:/tmp/.ICE-unix/7237

--cut-- there were "hundreds" of the lines above...

Just to let everyone know so that if someone else has similar problems, I was able to fix the situation with Gnome starting slow.
I had noticed after checking several things (including the ideas posted here) that I had an application starting that was not in my startup list for Gnome. I assumed this was left over from saving a session... I closed everything in Gnome, saved the session, logged out (ctrl+backspace to restart stuff) and voila, I was running normally again! I rebooted just to be sure, but things are now running normally again (actually faster since my /home directory is now on a faster scsi drive!) Too easy!
