Modprobe psmouse fails cannot run X

Trying to get Sarge 3.1 running on an old laptop (P1, 40 MB RAM, 1.4 GB HD). Have managed to configure X and I think it would work except there is some kind of problem with mouse detection.

"modprobe psmouse" returns "can't locate mouse module" BUT "mdetect" returns "/dev/psaux intellimouse"

I have a two-button PS/2 Logitech mouse which is connected to the PS/2 port. It works in DSL!

I have tried to edit the /etc/X11/XF86config-4 file so that it references both /dev/psaux AND /dev/input/mice and I have run "modprobe mousedev" before trying to startx.

The result is always the same: the black and white X screen comes up, then Fluxbox starts, but the cursor doesn't move.

I have read everything online I can find and I am completely STUMPED. This seems to be a recurrent issue. Does anyone have a suggestion? Thanks!

Here is my /var/log/XFree86.0.log

XFree86 Version 4.3.0.1 (Debian 4.3.0.dfsg.1-14sarge1 20050901212727 fjp@localhost.localdomain)

I don't see any error but try dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 as root advanced choice when you get to the protocol to use choose PS/2 it seems to be wanting to use the logitech one for your mouse, actually since I see you have edited the config do that again and change the Option "Protocol" line to have "PS/2" in it.

Can you post the config file then? Another idea might be booting the DSL copy the config file from it then using/comparing it to the one you get from Debian.

Well the DSL had its problems too, which is why I decided to try Debian. In DSL the mouse worked but the display was reversed and I could never solve it. Now the display looks great, but there is no mouse.

Here is the config file (thanks for your time):

# XF86Config-4 (XFree86 X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the XF86Config-4 manual page.
# (Type "man XF86Config-4" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xfree86 package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xfree86
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following commands as root:
#
# cp /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.custom
# md5sum /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 >/var/lib/xfree86/XF86Config-4.md5sum
# dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

There is really nothing that stands out as wrong in the config file except maybe removing this line Option "SendCoreEvents" "true". The DSL is a bootable CD right or at least I think it is you should probably boot with it check the log file and the config file it uses.

Well the DSK issue is complicated. Because I cannot boot from cd I was using an old zip drive to tranfer the contents of the cd onto my HD, then I used a boot floppy that would recognize these files. So it would be really tough at this point to go back to that system because I would need to repartition and reinstall everything. And even then I am not sure it would help because DSL doesn't use xfree86 but instead sort of stripped down X.

I sort of think it is a kernel issue, since modprobe psmouse always fails. And yet, when I run mdetect, it tells me that the mouse is detected on psaux. So something isn't right and I think it is something outside of the Xfconfig.

Well I finally got it to work!

I changed the input device to /dev/psaux and the protocol to IMPS/2. Then it worked!

I don't know why, but that is for another day.

Thanks for your help!
