missing volume control + blank sound menu in system settings

hello all,

I am on jessie, a day ago I purged
Code:

pulseaudio
and
Code:

jackd
today I noticed that volume control is missing from system tray together with the user name.
Also output and input devices tabs in All Settings-> Sound are blank.
Help, please.

Why did you purge pulseaudio? If you are not using pulse audio for your sound, what are you using? Can you run the command
Code:

alsamixer
from a terminal?

dear jdk,
Quote:

Why did you purge pulseaudio?
Recently I put lmms in my box but was not satisfied with its sound quality.
Following cues from the internet I added pulseaudio and jack which only aggravated the situation but when I purged pulseaudio and jack lmms started work up to my expectations (my guess is some libraries install together with jack and pulseaudio did the trick).
Now I am happy with lmms but cannot use audacity without input/output devices presented in system Settings->Sound.

alsamixer
shows a nice interface, it's a pity I do not understand what to do with it.
Thank you for your kind attention.
Waiting for further instructions

If you have removed pulseaudio then what sound server are you using in its place?

dear jdk,
IMHO after I purged pulseaudio and jack there is no sound server whatsoever in my box, alsa cares for my sound (and does it OK).
As for the missing items in notification area of system tray, I can live without my user name shown up there but volume control is the must for quick sound adjustment.

For a sound mixer install;
alsamixergui

I use volti for a systray volume control.

Thank you really,

I couldn't make volti work under gnome and now I am on xfce4 which transition solved the problem outlined in the subject: both username and volumecontrol are sitting back-to-back in the system tray (even more - alsamixergui is among default applications under xfce4).
As for system sound settings they differ from gnome and I have to look around there till then rest blessed and happy.
