missing fonts after fontconfig upgrade

Hey everyone. I installed Sarge on my P4 machine and everything related to my fonts worked correctly. I was able to see japanese, chinese, korean, etc. characters. Then, about a week ago I did an apt-get upgrade and there was an updated fontconfig package. After I installed this, I was no longer able to see all the fonts I was able to see before. Even some accented characters in the latin alphabet stopped working correctly anymore. I tried putting the dirs from my old local.conf into the new one and this only fixed a few accented chars. I also tried installing some xfonts packages for european and asian and doing a defoma-reconfigure and that didn't work either. I don't understand why the fonts just stopped working after upgrading font config. Some of the the font-related packages I have installed are:

ii defoma 0.11.8-0.1 Debian Font Manager -- automatic font config
ii fontconfig 2.3.1-2 generic font configuration library
ii libfontconfig1 2.3.1-2 generic font configuration library (shared l
ii libfreetype6 2.1.7-2.3 FreeType 2 font engine, shared library files
ii libxft1 4.3.0.dfsg.1-1 FreeType-based font drawing library for X (v
ii libxft2 2.1.2-6 FreeType-based font drawing library for X
ii msttcorefonts 1.2 Installer for Microsoft TrueType core fonts
ii ttf-opensymbol 1.1.3-7 The OpenSymbol TrueType font
ii ttf-xfree86-no 4.2.1-2 non-free TrueType fonts from XFree86
ii x-ttcidfont-co 17 Configure TrueType and CID fonts for X
ii xfonts-100dpi 4.3.0.dfsg.1-1 100 dpi fonts for X
ii xfonts-75dpi 4.3.0.dfsg.1-1 75 dpi fonts for X
ii xfonts-base 4.3.0.dfsg.1-1 standard fonts for X
ii xfonts-intl-as 1.2.1-3 International fonts for X -- Asian
ii xfonts-intl-ch 1.2.1-3 International fonts for X -- Chinese
ii xfonts-intl-eu 1.2.1-3 International fonts for X -- European
ii xfonts-intl-ja 1.2.1-3 International fonts for X -- Japanese
ii xfonts-scalabl 4.3.0.dfsg.1-1 scalable fonts for X

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!

Run "dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig" and try several combinations of the options provided to find out what works best for you.
