MintDM on Debian
 

Has anyone installed MintDM on Debian? I can find plenty of information on installing it on Ubuntu, which might work on Debian but I haven't tried yet. I thought I would ask first.

While the 'modern' display managers are nice, I miss all the cool login themes from Gnome 2. I saw that MintDM brings these back to life. However, I would rather not install Linux Mint. I want to get this on my Debian Sid install.

No, I mean the display manager that Linux Mint developed based on gdm2. Like GDM, KDM and LightDM.

I might be able to pull it out of the LMDE repos, but I wanted to see if anyone else has tried to install it and how much success, or lack there of, they had.

You could pretty easily pick up the package "mdm" out of the LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition) repo.

Their packages are compatable with Debian. Mdm is based on gdm3 so it should be no problem.

I would not mix LM package with Debian. Ubuntu has made some changes in where things are in the files system so that they are not compatable.

A word of causion though. LMDE is based on Debian testing. It gives a stable "snapshot" of Debian testing. So, while it is pretty easy and safe to add Debian repos to LMDE, the reverse is not always true. LMDE is always behind testing in package versions.

Mdm should not, however be a problem.

MDM isn't really supported for Debian installs and is only in the Mint repos not actual MATE Debian repos. I personally think you are better off sticking to LightDM but each to their own.

I haven't, I admit, checked lately but could just about swear that LMDE is using mdm.

I have never used LM so I must have run into it somewhere.

LMDE might use MDM but in Stefano's official MATE repository MDM is not available for Debian.

I hadn't thought about it but I do have an install of Wheezy with Mate. From a netboot install. Had no DM. Installed LightDM on it.

Not much sense in putting a DM in a Mate repo. Ubuntu would but they like weird depends. If you install the Debian package desktop-base I don't think you get a DM.

Gnome-core gives you gdm3 and I think mdm is just a rework of it to change the eyecandy mainly.

No insult intended to scorpioofthewoods,:) but I have never understood, and never shall, why so many people care about the aesthetics of display managers and splash screens. They are only on the screen for a few seconds when logging in. I would not care if they looked like vomit on the screen. I am much more concerned about how my system looks and works after I have logged in. But as the proverb says, to each their own. (Personally, I think several of the splash screens available for Debian are quite attractive, if it mattered.)

I've done totally clean minimal installs and added MATE and then built teh system up from there (takes about 400 more packages) and full Gnome installs and then added MATE on top and removed the duplicate Gnome packages (there aren't many) and still remove GDM3 and install LightDM. The only thing I miss on LightDM is the clock but I don't miss it bad enough to go back to GDM3.

You have it pretty right. There seems to be a lot of effort put into splash screens for a couple of seconds of viewing.

I believe, by the way, that your sanity may be in the same area as mine. If I hear or see any sign of either I will let you know.

I suspect some people leave their machine on the login screen for long periods of time, either because they're not using it or because it's been used remotely or it's serving something to someone. If you're one of those people then I suspect the login screen becomes more of an issue since you or others could be staring at it for long periods of time.

It is true that it really doesn't matter much which dm is used. Though I do see it more often as my wife also uses this computer so whenever we are done using our separate accounts we log out. So the login screen is up more often than for some people.

Also it is just something to play around with on the computer and see if it works. Though right now I have suddenly become very busy so I am going to have to put it off for a bit.
