Question Memory leak???

I have an old Celeron 400 system w/ 256MB RAM running Sarge 2.6.8-3-686.

After it's been up and running a few hours, free -lm indicates 243MB being used and only 13MB free even though I'm running icewm and almost no services.

Now, if from within this running box I init 1 to go to single user mode, the memory usage drops down to around 140MB. Here's the part I don't understand -- if I reboot into single user mode, free -lm shows only 23MB used, despite the fact that ps aux shows the same thing for both.

Anyone have any insights as to what is eating away at my machine?

Read http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=175419

It's higher usage of memory is by design

Nice. Thanks a lot Moloko. I missed on a good explanation when I was googling around last night. That makes sense. I was basically just reading the wrong line of the free output as to what is actually "free" for applications to run. I'll have to look again tonight to see what it really is. I think when I checked free right after gui boot, it was only using 104MB, so I suspect that I have around 150MB free...
