what error? you have to provide details, we can't just guess what your problem may be. that's what error messages are for.

Typing startx on login, I can now get X server to work - but only at 640x480 and cannot find higher resolution in control center.
What can I do ?

edit your xorg.conf, in the section where it says
Code:
Section "Screen"
         SubSection "Display"
add 1024x768 next to 640x640.

It may also be your video card driver, you may be using a generic one that only supports 640x480

On Xf86config is selected 1024x768 resolution - and my card supports that resolution in Mac Os.
So, I can't understand - I've tried many Linux distros ( Suse, RedHat, Mandrake) and never happened this to me ...

It's likely you've got the wrong driver configured for it. Can you post the output of lsmod, as well as the type of card you have?
