Lost desktop icons in gnome after uprade

Yesterday I did a dist-upgrade on one of my etch boxes and now my desktop icons are gone; my Computer, Home, Downloads, and Trash. Anyone know how to restore these? (The other etch box is fine.)

Do you mean the'yre gone, like missing, or that they have the wrong icon on them?

Gone, like missing. No desktop icons.

Edit: for some reason nautilus was not starting after upgrade.

This could be my problem also, how did you fix it?

ran nautilus from an xterm

nautilus &

then logged out and back in. Gnome saved the session which now starts nautilus automatically.

Arr ya, thanks. that did seem to work, I'll keep an eye on it, wonder why it failed though, that's a bit worrying

I wondered about that, but it's been fine for quite a while, through several upgrades.
