Locking up on Reboot
Running LMDE Elisa. When rebooting or installing new updates and reboot, 60% of the time when the LM icon comes up the system locks requiring to reboot. This has been going on for a year and with the latest update last evening after three reboots before I had access to my system I wanted to pose this question to the community for help.
Has anyone else had this issue? How do I go about solving this persistent issue? Thanks |
So hitting 'esc' key while locked up doesn't show you anything? One of my machines stalls once in awhile when unmounting a nfs mount point on exit (hitting esc shows you the exit messages instead of splash screen), but it eventually times out and reboots... unless I get impatient and hit the reset button.

Unfortunatly reboot on many computers doesn't fully act like a full power down. Some circuits may still have gates set or power applied.
Test maybe. Full power down. Remove ac. Press power button a few times then test if powers up. |
When there is another lockup I will try the two suggestions offered by jefro and rclark.

Could be the drive. My computer stopped rebooting months ago. Cold start, no problem, but a reboot always got stuck, either while loading elilo or loading the kernel. Then I discovered, quite by accident, that the drive was about to fail.
With the help of the community, I installed a new SSD and now the machine reboots without problems. |

The way I found out that my drive was on the verge of failing was a complete accident. I was trying to install AntiX-23 and it ran smartctl as part of the installation procedure and gave me a dire warning. I screamed for help and the LQ community took over, told me what further tests to run to be sure of the matter, and guided me in buying and installing a new drive. And no one bit my head off!! |

Saying something like, "I've tried to check the logs, but don't see anything", or at the very least what hardware they're running. But we get nothing past their desktop environment an version of Debian, and are somehow supposed to guess??? What did you post when you had a problem; actual details, or just something vague?? No, thanks..at some point, posters have to provide details and information without folks having to repeatedly ask. |

That thread contains nothing about the earlier reboot failures because I had no idea before reading this thread that the two things could be connected. Now I think they probably were. Maybe the OP should run the specific smartmon tests that I was told to run and post the results. |

boot to command line and maybe see if X or something more to go on problem wise.

I have no education with computers and the science. Linux I love but do not have the knowledge you presume I have. But to see you come back at a "little old lady" who does her best to provide support with kindness is very repulsive. You are an old fart as the saying goes. Myself I have decided to go back to Windows to escape the criticism of persons like yourself TBOne. It is insulting and an irritation to this fine Linux Community. Who put YOU in charge???? Hazel, thanks so much for your help in the past and I do wish there were more persons like you. Bless you Hazel. |

If you think that using Windows is going to magically make people on Microsoft forums mind-readers (as you seemingly expect US to be), it won't. They, too, are going to ask you questions and will also get fed up after years of having to ask over and over. This thread is an excellent example...myself and several others asked things, and you don't bother answering, but seem to have time to post an insulting rant. And hazel needs help from NO ONE, and I certainly didn't insult or criticize her or "come back at" anyone, but pointed out your seeming unwillingness to ever provide any sort of details when having your hand out for help. |

@poncedeleon: please read the earlier thread which I referenced in #9 and carry out the smartmonctl commands that I was told to run. Compare the results with those that I posted. If they are at all similar, especially in the two variables that other posters draw attention to, then do as I did and get a new drive. And don't go back to Windows!!! Do you really want a system that locks up for a half-hour compulsory update every other time you boot it? |
