I have recently recompiled the 2.6.11.4 kernel and linked all fo the files when I finally decided to edit my /boot/grub/grub.conf. When I tried to open this file, I was amazed it did not even exist. Considering the fact that this seems to be the normal place for the config file (at least judging by a search for "grub.conf location") I somehow thought I deleted this file. I was amazed thought that when I rebooted grub was still there and was displaying my boot partitions. So I have been searching for the location of the grub.conf on my Sarge Debian installed and I can't seem to find it, and any help offered in locating it would be appreciated. Thanks!
Debian uses menu.lst for the grub configuration? That's a bit crazy... I thought menu.lst was a supplemental file, containing info for the boot screen.

The code looks for menu.lst. A lot of (most actually) distros link grub.conf to menu.lst so no-one ever knows.
Some (Gentoo included, being a source distro) patch grub to actually use grub.info.
Then lnk back the other way .
And it turns out that Gentoo doesn't do it every release - Matir, have a look at the patches used for the last couple of ebuilds for (legacy) grub.
No wonder no-one knows what the hell is going on. Makes it *REAL* hard to give decent advice on a mixed board like this.
LOL, granted. I've always thought grub was still a bit volatile, and I suppose this supports that claim. Since lilo has always done everything I've wanted/needed, I've just stuck with lilo.
